Chapter 15
Either her stays were too tight, or she just couldnât breathe properly. Eva shifted her lunch basket and notebook to her other arm as she waited for the carriage the next morning. He wasnât late. Sheâd been unable to sleep thinking about how she would greet him, what he would say, or if nothing would change at all. Her oneâperhaps rashâmove had changed everything, just as George had predicted.
The black carriage turned the corner and her heart leapt. In a few moments, sheâd know just how he felt. The tingles in her stomach quivered to a fever pitch as the horses stopped in front of her and the door swung open. George moved quickly to get out and help her. Heâd also worn his best clothes and had shaved the slight stubble on his jaw that had scratched at her chin the night before. His eyes were bright as they lit on her with an appreciative smile.
âGood morning,â he whispered just for her ears. âI trust you slept well.â
She wondered if he had. If he hadnât, he hid it well. Sheâd had to use a bit of flour under her eyes to hide the dark circles. âAnd you. I wish I could say that I did. As you predicted, I was a little worried about today. About what you might think of me.â
He glanced around them. âBest get into the carriage before we speak plainly. There are curious ears all around.â
Sheâd been so concerned about talking with him she hadnât noticed the women milling about behind her.
âCome, letâs get in the carriage.â He held out his hand to assist her up.
He climbed in, and then closed the door and sat across from her. She hoped he wouldâve chosen the seat next to her at least this time, but his manners won out.
âI confess, I had a difficult night as well. How do you propose we move forward?â His eyes trailed their way from her hair down to her lips and back to her eyes. Heat crept up her neck at his blatant appreciation.
âI think it best that, at least at the library, we go back to being just as we were before last night.â She licked her suddenly parched lips. The words were difficult to push past the lump in her throat. They didnât want to come, but it would be wrong to continue. Theyâd get little accomplished if they continued as they did last night.
âI would have to agree, although I do hope youâll consider spending time with me in the evenings. I find that Iâm suddenly rather attached to you.â
Her heart did a little flip. âAnd Iâm looking forward to getting to know you further, George.â
His mouth quirked on one side as they turned the corner just a few blocks from the offices. âI can see an idea turning in your head, Eva. What is it?â
âOh, I wasnât thinking anything.â She refused to let him see her discomfort. He was a temptation and it was never a good idea to get too close to the flame.
